Bottom end rot, or blossom end rot as it is commonly known, is not caused by bacteria or a virus, but by environmental conditions. An otherwise normally developing fruit develops a tan or brown spot on the bottom. The spot spreads and becomes thick and leathery. Blossom end rot is a common problem in container-grown tomato plants, but the solution is as close as your watering can.

Blossom end rot is usually caused by a calcium deficiency, according to the New Mexico State University. Calcium is important for healthy development because it binds the cells in maturing fruits together.

An inadequate amount of calcium at the blossom end can cause damage to young fruit, which results in blossom end rot a few weeks later. Calcium is commonly found in water. Tomatoes grown in containers are more prone to blossom end rot than those grown in-ground because they dry out more quickly.
